Absolute beauty here from Moon Boots remixing Alison Valentine's "Peanut Butter", featuring some mesmerizing, harmonic vocal vork that leaves me with goosebumps every single listen!
Hats off to Moon Boots for a killer set on a Thursday night in Oslo back in May for a dancefloor of like 5-10 people, a definite highlight in 2013!
Warm, rich-textured, boomin' deep house groover from Maya Jane Coles, putting her trademark touch to Rudimental's single "Free" using only Emeli Sandé's vocals. Safe to say, she's on another level! Roy Davis Jr. also did a great remix to this song (listen HERE)!
This hedonic, house burner from Tanner Ross & Slow Hands have surely influenced countless bodies to uncontrollably close their eyes while slowly vibing to the 'Wolf + Lamb' standout! I certainly plead guilty!
"So Good", an addictive, feel-good stomper coming from the mighty Swiss Round Table Knights on the superb 'OFF Recorings'. I personally hold this track responsible for more nights out than I can remember :P, instant party vibes!
The mysterious Tiger & Woods put out my favorite nu disco record in 2013, the ultra slick "Pitch"! Ahh, when that soulful vocal sample kicks in at around 4:35, pure heaven!! Skipping straight to that mark should be punishable by law thooo!
The multi-talented Breach aka Ben Westbeech hit gold this year with the bass-loaded club bomb "Jack"! The 'dirtybird' anthem even went on to reach the top 10 in the official UK singles chart!
If you didn't feel this bassline vibrate deep in your chest in 2013, you deff missed out!
Most people will probably remember Aloe Blacc for his Avicii collaboration in 2013, but for me it was all about this motivational masterpiece! Can't tell y'all how many times this tune gave me an extra lift on one of those rough days! Also featured in one of the dopest commercials of the year in Kevin Garnett's Beats by Dre ad.
No matter how many people who are tired of this tune, there's no denying how big of an impact "Get Lucky", Daft Punk, Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers had on the music scene this year. At least I got to truly appreciate and harass the repeat button to this jam, before it reached out to all the elementary school kids and everyone in between.
Both Disclosure & Paul Woolford (also under his Special Request moniker) had a massive year!! Add the breathtaking vocals of London Grammar into the mix, and you have one of the biggest remixes in 2013!
In a year which saw Hot Since 82 shoot to fame both as a producer and DJ, there was no track bigger for the Englishman than his remix of "Bigger Than Prince" by the legendary Green Velvet. Slightly edging out The Martinez Brothers remix for me, but only just.
I'm sure I'm not the only one who had this Drake smash down as a guilty pleasure song the past few months. With a tingling nu disco undertone in the beat, a hook to die for, and a timeless melody, there's more reasons than one that this unexpected Drake track became as big as it did. "Cause you're a good girl and you know it"!!!
The most agressive tune of 2013! If "Pursuit" doesn't get your blood boiling, there's something seriously wrong with you!! Accompanied by a siiick music video (watch HERE, if you're over 18 :P!), this track was the #1 highlight on French techno/electro genius Gesaffelstein's brilliant album "Aleph". He also co-produced two joints on Kanye's "Yeezus", more on that further down!
The versatile Childish Gambino (aka actor & comedian Donald Glover) truly showcases his talents by rapping, singing, writing and co-producing the absolutely amazing record "3005". The hottest track on his album "Because the Internet", deff one of my top 3 albums in 2013!
To say Kanye went hard on this heavy-hitting controversial record is an understatement!
With a production team consisting of Daft Punk, Gesaffelstein, Brodinski, Mike Dean, and No ID, this record couldn't become anything but a force!!
The #1 anthem at the Miami WMC in 2013, built around a divine, uplifting vocal, the soothing accapella version by San Soda of FCL's "It's You" caused an endless amount of euphoria on dance floors all over the would, and all without a single kick drum!! True anthem!!!
In a year which saw Drake put out hit singles left and right from the critically acclaimed album "Nothing Was the Same", it was the smooth, harmonic "Girls Love Beyoncé" that still stood out as my pick of the bunch! Featuring the usually behind-the-scenes singer-songwriter James Fauntleroy on the hook reinterpretating Destiny's Child's "Say My Name" (another tune paying homage to the R&B classic coming further down on the list!) in the most amazing fashion. And that background vocal, "duu dududu dudu duu", which SBTRKT built their smashing edit of the track upon (listen HERE!), takes me to higher grounds!!
Disclosure's biggest single of 2013, in a year which saw them reach international fame on a level seemly impossible for a young British house/garage duo. Taken from their amazing album "Settle", my fav' electronic music album in 2013 (at least track-by-track!), and featuring the voice of AluneGeorge, "White Noise" comes in at #9!
An absolutely amazing single here from Dusky, I'd probably reach at least 5 figures if I was to count how many times I've screamed "nobody, nobody else" during a pre-party or at a club in 2013. A garage-fused house anthem! Slightly edging out "Careless" at #26.
BOMB!!!
I'm a sucker for that tropical nu disco bassline, and no one does it better than 'French Express' head honcho Perseus! Sampling vocals from both Ashanti and Cassie, "Shadow of the Beast" is the epitome of soulful, feel-good electronic music!
This ended as my fav' hip hop record of 2013, after months of consistent influence courtesy of my roomie's (much appreciated Karani bro's haha :P!). "Type of Way" was the second single off of Rich Homie Quan's "Still Goin In: Reloaded" tape.
Grammy-nominated post-dubstep mastermind James Blake has been praised through the roof for his amazing album "Overgrown", with the lead-single "Retrograde" coming in at #5 in my top tracks of 2013! My fellow Oslo-native Finnebassen did a superb edit of the song too, grab it HERE!
Kaytranada took the blogosphere by storm this year with his sharp, trademark remixes, edits, and originals.
The perfect blend of R&B and electronic music is the way I would describe this fantastic remix of Teedra Moses' "Be Your Girl". Can't forget about the Kaytranada remix of Janet Jackson's "If", released in 2012, either (listen/download HERE!).
One of the hottest producers in 2013, Cyril Hahn, delivered an absolutely amazing remix of the Destiny's Child classic "Say My Name", darkening the vocals over a vibing, riding bassline! I love this remix with every bone in my body!!! Premium speakers/headphones is a must!!
Duke Dumont's chart-topping single "Need U (100%)" w/ singer-songwriter A*M*E has been a favorite of mine all year long, and I could impossibly grow tired of it!! Along with the Skreamix this has been on repeat like crazyyy, and still is to this day!! Even nominated for a Grammy for Best Dance Recording, and should sure as hell, more than deservedly take home the statue!!!
The MK Dub III of Storm Queen's "Look Right Through", without a doubt my favorite track of 2013!!!!
What a journey this track has had, released as a third remix of "Look Right Through" by MK on the "Deep Down & Defected" compilation late 2012 in order to continue playing and elevate his increasingly popular 'Don't Talk to Me Dub'. Little did the legendary house music producer, remixer and pioneer know that the underground dub would go on to top the official UK singles chart!
The track and its creator is also behind my favorite moment in clubland in 2013, when MK dropped the record in a sweaty backyard on a Wednesday night back in August @ Oslo's own Jaeger. I literally threw away my drink to get to the front when this track came on... Ahhh, the memories :P!!
